The March Slice of Life Story Challenge
hosted at the Two Writing Teachers
Join us for a month of writing!

Sunday started off with a quick click of the 'snooze' button.  Then dragging my feet back to bed.  No need to rush and get up.  We had plenty of time before church.

I savor the weekends when I don't have to rush to get up.  Rush to get ready.  Or rush to wake up my precious sleeping angels.  I snuggled back under the covers and closed my eyes.  Temporarily.

Within only a couple minutes, I heard voices.  My twin four and a half year old daughters awake and talking.  I closed my eyes and just listened.  Smiling.

"Let's read this one."

"Oh!  Ok.  I like that one."

"The unicorn wished of a little girl."  Page turn.

"And then ..."  More reading of the pictures.  Page turn.

"And then the other unicorns laughed at the sparkly unicorn ... "  Page turn.

"And then ..."  More retelling of the book we read before bed last night.  Page turn.

"The girl dreamed of the unicorn too and their wishes came true.  The end."  Book closed.

"What should we read next?  Can we read this one?"

These conversations will never grow old.  I sat up in bed and listened to more in delight.

And then I had to capture this moment in a photograph too.

My girls enjoying an early morning read together.

  1. Love these moments. I'm getting to relive them all again with our 4 year old grandsons. They can have the most amazing conversations and the games and stories they make up are priceless. Their imaginations are limitless

  4. Delicious. Listening to my children talk in the morning is one of my great joys. Their bedroom looks so luxurious. I think we underestimate the importance of the bedroom. Comfy sheets, books everywhere. We spend a whole lot of time in there.

  5. Michelle, I love this! I love when I am privileged to eavesdrop on a moment and they don't know I'm listening. I love it even more when it surrounds books!

Such an adorable moment. Thanks for letting us listen in, too.

  6. Beautiful. And something I missed out on in life. Nevertheless, I can feel the glow and the charm--especially from the image.

  10. This is precious! I wish I had been writing when my children were little. I was a stay-at-home mom but writing wasn't a part of my life then. I sure missed out on a lot. Now I get to capture almost-adult moments which are special in their own way. I love the "book rail" beside their bed. I need that in my room! Ha!

  11. Precious! Of all the mischief they could have gotten into, they chose to read together. You didn't need the picture - you already painted it with your words!

  15. I loved reading about your little readers and their book love on Sunday morning. They had fun sharing and you can imagine how much richer their reading lives will be because they can always have each other as reading buddies.

  17. Oh my goodness they have grown. So so precious. I miss the early morning conversations the most, in my home now there is only silence in the mornings... I think I found my slice for today! Thank you for sharing your amazing babies and their stories. You capture it so well Michelle.

  18. Sisters are great! :) Are they reading? Or just remembering the story? My daughter, who is 4, is not doing any real reading yet, but she can retell familiar stories and it makes my teacher-mama heart so proud!

  19. That is such a precious moment. I love when children start to read the pictures and put together ideas about the stories from re-reads. Sometimes their tales are more fun that the written words. :)

  20. Precious! Absolutely precious! Seems like just yesterday my daughter was their age "reading" our favorite books.

  21. LOVE Love this! So glad you captured and shared it!

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
