{ #sol15} Time to Dance 3/31

The March Slice of Life Story Challenge

Join us for a month of writing!

My four and a half year old girls have tried various sports.  We encourage them to stay active, release some energy, and want them to test the waters to see what they might like.

The girls have taken many swimming classes.  An important life skill.  Traveling back and forth from the YMCA with wet hair in the wintertime is more of my issue.  We are on a winter swimming hiatus now.

They tried a session of gymnastics.  Not their game.

The girls participated in Hockey Tots.  Basically beginning ice skating with a little hockey.  Daddy loves this sport because he can get out on the ice with them.  They have become more comfortable in a year since they started.  However, this sport can get expensive.  Daddy is hoping for scholarships in the future.

We have avoided princesses and tutus for as long as we can.  The idea of dance class was thrown out there.

"Yes, pleeeeease!" was the immediate response in unison.

This week the girls are living in dancing ballerina heaven.  Floating around the room.  Up on tippy toes.  Not-so-gracefully spinning around.  Lots of "Mommy, watch this! Watch what I can do!"

We started dance lessons last evening.  This includes ballet shoes and tap shoes.  Leotards, tights, and a flowing pink skirt.

It's dress-up on steroids.  But it's real.

And they absolutely have fallen in love with dance.  {Cue curtsy.}

Comments

  1. My daughter is five and I fought the dance mom calling for as long as I could. She just loves it too much. Welcome to dancemomdom!

  2. This brings back such wonderful memories. I can picture these tots and their pure joy with all that is dance. Many, many years later, that joy still remains. Enjoy every second!

  3. They so love to dance. I can see them twirling and spinning and enjoying themselves. They will be performing every evening. Hugs to all. Love ya, Mom

  4. My daughter avoided the dance thing - basketball was her thing and I am fine with that. I am sure you will have many "performances" ahead. More memories in the making!

  5. I appreciated your line, "Dress up on steroids" because that is what dance feels like from the mom's perspective. The outfits, the makeup, the hair, it is like they get to grow up and walk in mommy's shoes. My girls see me get ready for work paying attention to what I look like (no makeup for this mommy though) and they want to emulate me. Best of luck and enjoy.

  6. But by exposing them to lots of things, they will know what they really like. My oldest granddaughter dances and plays basketball in the winter, softball in the summer. She's been known to catch tadpoles and fish while in dress up clothes. It's all balance.....

  7. Yay to dance, tutus and tights, twirling and floating! (You knew I would say it, didn't you?)

  8. Dance is so much fun - a favorite at our house too - even when they're so grown up!! Enjoy every minute!!

  9. When they do something they want to do, they love it and learn from it all the more. Hooray for your girls...tutus and dance shoes and all!

  10. How wonderful to find the thing that makes your heart sing! Such a good description of the search for something just right, too!

  11. Maybe dance and hockey will collide into figure skating one day. I bet your two little darlings are priceless when they are all dressed up and twirling! It is so funny how they have their own tastes and opinions so early. A friend of mine loves soccer and tried to get her son to play. He came off the field after his first game shaking his head in disbelief and said to her, "I just don't understand why they make us fight over one ball the whole time when there is a whole bag of soccer balls right over there!"

  12. Exercise is exercise, right? There's a dance studio on the route where I walk my dog, I love to stand at the window and watch. So graceful!

  13. How wonderful that they have fallen in love with dancing!

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
