Are you noticing that stories are
easier and easier to find in your day
with open eyes and open ears?

There are so many little slices
that make up my day and who I am.
Just today I could write about ...

A sick child ... again
My "I'm almost 40" mammogram
A student missing me at school

My thought for the day from my mom
A student sharing the love of a book
My distinguished colleague

A daughter authoring a book
The extra helping hand this morning
My eyes carefully closing, listening

I am more attuned to the
littlest moments in my life
that can be crafted into stories.

I'm capturing words and phrases
scribbling in my notebook
that holds the possibility of story.

It's having the power to choose the story
to put into words and the privilege
to share with you, dear reader.

Are you finding the
stories ... or are they
finding you?

  1. So lovely. I too am enjoying the careful attention to daily life that this project encourages.

  2. Michelle, stories are indeed easier to find when your eyes are open. Yesterday, I looked out my hotel window and found one before going to my conference. (I told my daughter about your new home post since she is looking for her first and is so disappointed in what she is finding.)

  3. You are so right my friend! I too have my ears and eyes open and more in tuned to my surroundings. It always amazing me how I find something to write about each day in March and on Tuesdays I am in a loss. xo

  4. Somedays, the stories seem to come in all shapes and sizes. Others, they trickled in like a brief rain shower. Either way, this month, I've been able to see so much more around me. Between the funny and crazy to absurd and obnoxious, because I'm watching more, I'm seeing more.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. It makes sense. :)

  6. I think they find us --I am amazed that I am never at a loss for a topic -sometimes at a loss for time but never for a topic. I agree this community of readers is particularly motivating. Hope your little one is feeling better soon!

  7. There are days when they just seem to pop out of nowhere and my fingers just start typing. Then there are those other days when nothing seems to reach out to me. I do find that I have a different perspective and seem to notice a lot of things that I overlooked. Love ya, Mom

  8. I definitely feel as the month has gone on that I the stories are finding me. I feel that I am paying so much more attention to my days and interactions with people

  9. Such a reflective question. I think it's a bit of both for me. I'm relieved when they find me, but I'm challenged (in good ways) to find more

  10. Always one of my favorite things about this challenge! I'm actually planning a mini-lesson for tomorrow about living like a writer and noticing the stories all around us, so I just had to read your post when I saw the title! :-)

  11. Such a great post! Tonight I actually started my post with... I don't have anything to write about today, but then my topic just popped in my head! :) Funny how this works sometimes. :) Thanks for sharing!

  12. Thanks for the reminder to keep my writing notebook close at hand, always, so I can jot down the stories that come to me during the day. You continue to inspire me day after day.

  14. I'm having a really hard time writing this year and am not writing very well. Think I need to start carrying a notebook and writing down story ideas throughout the day.

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
