{#sol15} that moment when 10/31

The March Slice of Life Story Challenge
hosted at the Two Writing Teachers
Join us for a month of writing!

That moment ...
When it's almost my time to read, write, and finish the evening relaxing.

That moment ...
When we complete the nighttime routine: brushing teeth, potty, jammies, books, and prayers.

That moment ...
When we tuck the girls in bed, resettle all their stuffed animals, and kiss them goodnight.

That moment ...
When we turn out the lights and remind them, "No more talking.  Love you to the moon and back."

That moment ...
When I start a load of laundry, pick up in the kitchen, and straighten a few piles in the living room.

That moment ...
When I grab my phone, finally settle in on the couch, and open up my laptop.

That moment ...
When I take a deep breath and  --

That moment ...
When I hear a quiet voice calling, "Mommmmyyyy.  Mommmmyyyy."

That moment ...
When I really don't want to get up --

That moment ...
When I look over at my husband and secretly wish his name was Mommy this one time.

That moment ...
When I realize that my girls needing "Mommmmmyyyy" won't last forever.

  1. Nice. :) I don't get that. My kids think I am the only one who can solve their problems! I keep reminding them that Daddy is capable too! But you're right - it won't last forever so we better enjoy it while we can.

  2. Moms will always be needed (no matter how old our children are). I think the name "Mom" actually means "she will take care of everything". Those special moments will lessen as they get more independent, but you still will always be needed. Hugs, love ya, Mom

  3. So, so true... Those days are in the past for me, and (believe it or not) I miss them, sometimes.

  4. Oh boy, this is my life. I know exactly what moment you are describing. Exactly.

Do you mind if I use this Slice as one of my Be Inspired posts later this month when I'm hosting the challenge? Please email me at dmurphy[at]msd143.org if I have your permission. Thanks.

  5. Totally! It seems nonstop but I wouldn't trade it for the world. There's going to come a day when my little girl won't want to be picked up and carried around, but she'll be eager to get out of the house and be off with her friends.
Beautifully written, it really captures daily life with children :)

  6. I remember your previous "The Moment" post, where I held my breath when the little bodies moved in the bed, but didn't wake up. The evenings are different, aren't they? And you are right, kids grow and times change.

  10. Lovely capture, Michelle, & one to savor, but you did make me laugh when you said you sometimes wished your husband's name was "Mommy". You put the right mix of sweetness with humor into your writing.

  11. Your voice comes through so clearly in your writing. You have a gift!!
ps I used to tell my girls that I was changing my name...

    1. I have tried that one both at home and in my classroom. Some how it never works - that name changing thing.

  12. I remember those days so well. When I wished that Mommy wasn't mine. Now I'd give anything to hear it echo through the halls of my home again. Now I have Charlie jumping and whining for a walk. I'll take it. Ah, empty nest has its perks.

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
