{reader} reading first

Yesterday evening was a perfect night to get outside and play.  Sunshine late into the evening with a slight chill in the air.

"But I want to read this book," P. demanded.

I never want to discourage reading, but we wouldn't be able to play outside all night.

"Hey, we can read it when we come back inside before bedtime.  Let's go play outside now!"

"I'm bringing the book with me." 

I wasn't going to argue with her.

P. jumped into her shoes, slid on her coat, and lugged the books outside.  Daddy gave her a questioning look as she stepped onto the patio.

Surrounded by daylight (and wearing a bike helmet), she kneeled at the outside table and read her book first.

    This makes me smile! I'm really not surprised. Think how much time you've spent with books. I'm sure you've read Mem Fox's, Reading Magic. It's an older book now, with a powerful message about the impact reading to children has. My oldest daughter was just like this. I can remember more than once saying, "Put that book down and ____." I'd shake my head as I listened to myself utter these words.

    Looks like you have a book nut in the making.

    That is so sweet! I love the picture. She is so adorable with her bike helmet and book. You have certainly instilled good habits in her! I remember asking my teachers if I could stay inside and read during recess when I was in middle school. Maybe your daughter will end up doing the same... :)

    I love that you are teaching your girls that there is value in all of it--the reading, the being outside, the balance. So sweet that she just couldn't help but steal another few moments of reading, even though she didn't want to give up that outdoor playtime. You were smart to capture this sweet moment--and even smarter to nurture her to grow into this moment as a reader.

soLs: a week

Slice of Life Stories hosted by the  Two Writing Teachers I can't believe it's already been one whole week. Sometimes vacations are over in a blink, but other times vacations move slowly to enjoy every moment.  That's how this vacation is going - slowly, but with so much to enjoy. Of course, it is hard being away from home and the every-day-usual, but what I have truly enjoyed the most is the evenings.  After the girls are tucked in bed, it becomes my time to do what I choose to do because I have NO to-do list!  Nothing!  No cleaning, no laundry (thanks Mom!), no dinner (thanks Dad!), no dishes, no nothing.  Instead I have guilt-free time to read books, browse Twitter, catch up on blog reading, scrounge...
