My husband and I thought it would be a good idea to get back into our Wednesday night date nights. That time had slipped away from us after our move into a new home. Time together to actually talk and have full length conversations without interruption is rare with two six year olds entertaining us with their stories and thoughts on life.

We also agreed to attend a marriage course at our local church to continue to grow together in our faith and strengthen our marriage. So Wednesday night date nights are at church. We discuss hot topics, such as the art of communication, the impact of family, and resolving conflict.

The other night at the end of the class, we were encouraged to ask each other, "What can I pray for you today?" and spend a few minutes praying together.

Jon asked me first. Silence. Sometimes it feels like all or nothing. He waited patiently as he learned to do so when we discussed the art of communication the previous week.

I formed my thoughts. "Balance. Balancing everything in life between school and home and the challenge -- "

"Wait. What?" My eyes slowly met his. I quietly whispered, "It's March first. The challenge ..."

"Oh, no." He put his head down and I patted him on his back for reassurance and quietly laughed.

"You can pray for me," he pleaded.

I smiled knowing he will forgive me ... perhaps next week when we discuss the power of forgiveness.

  2. I am definitely sharing this post with my husband, especially as a first time slicer. And when you figure out the whole balance issue, please let me know, it's 24 years and counting. Thanks goodness for forgiving husbands :)

  3. LOL!! Short, sweet and to the point! I loved this. And I really did laugh out loud!!

  4. I can identify with this as my husband has expressed how much he does not like March slicing. You'd think they'd be used to it by now.

  5. Fortunately, Dad looks forward to reading both of our slices and encourages me by asking what I've written each day (I think he's just checking to see if it's about him). Being retired means that I have more time to balance all those things that need to be done and he helps me considerable all the time. I can see Jon's face when the light dawned that it was March 1st. I'll keep praying that you both can find a balance in your lives. It's good to be able to spend time alone together. Love ya, Mom

  8. This one had me laughing! So far I've slipped my slicing into my own private moments, but it's only a matter of time before I can't cook dinner because I've got to finish a slice!

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
