March Slice of Life Story Challenge
hosted at the Two Writing Teachers
Join us for a month of writing!

Dearest Slice of Life Reader,

You are back!

Yesterday, I told you a little about who I am.  Today is a little advice for Y-O-U:

You will enjoy this journey of writing this month, if it's your first (woo-hoo, day one done!) or your fourth (that's me!) or your seventh (amazing!) year participating.

You will enjoy the highs of the comments and the accomplishment of writing day-after-day-after-day.

You will start noticing the world around you is full of stories.  Little seeds planted and story-after-story will blossom.

You will need to savor those little moments in a notebook that you will always want to carry with you - or those moments will float away in mid-air.

You will struggle with the lows of writing and wonder what to write about.

You will probably even write a slice about not knowing what to slice about that unknowingly becomes your slice.

And then you will connect with so many others.

You will have to continue to write through the struggle.  It's always a good idea to have a backup plan.

You will want to take time to reflect throughout the month-long challenge: think about the thirty-one day journey, your writing process, and the creation of your writing habit.

You will also want to remember to lift up every writer when you read a slice by leaving a comment that showed you were there, that you read their precious words, that you heard their story, and that you connected.

Even if it's as simple as, "I hear you" or "I'm so glad you wrote today" or "Write on."

You will understand that those words push us through the challenge.

You will really enjoy this process.

I am so excited that we are on the journey together!

Write on (and be sure to let me know you stopped by!),
Michelle

  1. Michelle, you are once again "write" on! You have captured this community of writers in each "You will", because we do. I'm so glad that you gave me the encouragement to start this writing - it has made me so much more aware of my life and its "mundane" happenings that turn into something rememberable. And, yes, these comments are what makes our writing worthwhile. Thanks for your insight and dedication. Love ya, Mom

  3. Love it. Especially like the advice about having a back up plan. I have a couple of those on the back burner "just in case". Who am I kidding? We fourth years know that at some point, we will need a back up plan!

  4. Such great advice! This rings especially true for me: "You will start noticing the world around you is full of stories." So true!

  7. Great post! One of my biggest disappointments last year was not writing every day because I FORGOT. Not that I didn't have something to write, but the day happened, the night came, we made dinner, we, you know, "did the dishes" and then the next thing I knew it was tomorrow. I'm hoping to be better this time around.

  8. I'll never forget the wonderful advice you gave a few years back, or was it just last year? read, write, comment, repeat...oh and pushing the arrow key, hold and go back to Day 2 to find slicers faster. You are amazing! And you always are a girl with a plan. xo

  9. "Savor the moments in your notebook" Great advice!

  10. Oh, how many slices there have been about not knowing what to write abut. It kind of helps to sort thoughts. And the comments - they really matter.

  11. As a first time slicer, thank you for that encouragement! After one day, I already feel like I'm connected with an amazing group of very special people! I look forward to the journey!

  12. You 'wrote on' beautifully, Michelle. Sometimes I'm stumped, & start writing anything & then the words do appear. I hope many many read this-good for the new ones and those of us who have been writing for a while-still 'write on'!

  23. Taking your words to my classroom tomorrow. I love the line - "You will need to savor those little moments in a notebook that you will always want to carry with you - or those moments will float away in mid-air." Savor is my OLW for this year and it just keeps popping up everywhere.

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
