solsc.2012: addiction 1/31

Join the challenge and write!
Slice of Life Stories hosted by the

I've been thinking, wondering, waiting for an idea to spark.  I mean, I want my first slice of the challenge to be memorable.  To stand out.  To say something B-I-G.

I know. I know.  I'm over thinking this:  Just write.

Hi, my name is Michelle and I have many addictions.

I'm addicted to Twitter -- connecting with forward-thinking teachers is awe-inspiring.

I'm addicted to Pinterest -- wishing I would have thought of that idea! Just genius!

I'm addicted to reading -- picture books, YA, audio, MG, professional reads, blogs . . .

I'm addicted to learning -- growing, thinking, changing, trying, never-ending learning.

I'm addicted to playing -- learning through the eyes of my almost-two year old girls.

I'm addicted to chocolate -- mint chocolate, dark chocolate - okay, any chocolate.

I'm addicted to writing -- well, soon to be addicted again.

I'm looking forward to practicing,
trying something new,
capturing moments in my life
so that
writing will be
a habit
a need
a wanting
a yearning
a desire
to fulfill
every day.

  1. Love this! Hey, an idea for next year-- everyone introduces themselves somehow on the first day.

I'm addicted to lots of the same things- chocolate, twitter, teaching and learning.
    I don't quite understand Pinterest.

  2. You have the best kind of addictions (especially the chocolate). Your writing always make me wish I had said that, and once again you've hit a home run with this post.

  4. I'm glad you are addicted to things like chocolate and reading. The addiction so often has a negative vibe towards it.

I hope you are successful in getting addicted to writing:)

  5. Great first post MIchelle! It is so you! I agree with Elsie. I always wish I had said things the way you do! That first post--enormous pressure to get it right. I hope we take as much care with the next 30!

  6. Hi.
My name is Terje. I am also addicted to reading, writing, learning, chocolate and Pinterest. It's good to belong to an understanding support group.
How do the ideas form in your head? They come out just right - the words, the style, the structure.
I wish you a fulfilling writing month! :)

  7. I think we're addicted to a lot of the same things. However, I'm not really addicted to Twitter. I'm trying hard to prevent that addiction. Pinterest is where it's at for me. (Great English, I know.)

  8. Your list of "addictions" is entertaining and so true! My favorite part was the end of your post though. The line about "a desire to fulfill every day" is so powerful!

  9. I'm addicted to many of the same things you are. Hoping to become more of a natural writer, not addicted through the Slice of Life 2012. Looking forward to reading more of your post.

  10. I probably need a Pinterest account now, since I share all of your other addictions! I am amazed at your ability to write- and write well -with two-year old twins! Quite an achievement, right there.

  12. I'm not sure I can add anything new, Michele, but I'm going to be happy to keep reading your posts. They're always so creative & get me thinking. I can't find time to do much on twitter. I see you all there at times, but then move on to other things. I am loving the Pinterest though, & always reading & chocolate. Thanks for covering every base, including the twins. My they are growing!

  15. Michelle,
Oh, addictions. I have many of the same addictions. I'm pretty sure I don't want to know how much time I've wasted on Pinterest in the last month.

  16. I love the smooth flow of your words. You have a way of really connecting with your words and getting to that sweet spot in writing so often. I look forward to your posts! This was definitely worthy of slice #1!

  17. This is a great example of why we need to just write; by the end, you've hit on some lovely, poetic, captivating rhythm and idea. Excellent! :)

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
