Slice of Life Stories hosted

Well, it seems that last week's episode (access denied) was just a glitch.  All is in working order!  Phew!  It wouldn't have been the end of the world, but just a little bump in the road.

Life always throws little bumps in the road.  They say that's what makes us stronger.

The start of the school year has brought many little bumps.  I'm still trying to figure out the new schedule -- or shall I say, I'm trying to figure out how to do everything I was able to do over the summer now with school in session.  It's not working.

I have stacks of books waiting to be read.

I haven't browsed my Twitter feed or tweeted in weeks.

I'm thinking less about writing and blogging, and my notebook has scarce scribbles.

I understand that I should let some things go, but I can't.

I'm busy (okay, addicted) to checking my Pinterest updates.

I'm dedicated to reading those blog posts that continue to inspire.

I'm still trying to work into a consistent exercise routine.

It is quite a balancing act.  Trying to do it all and then some.  My first priority are my daughters.  Their time always comes first.  Therefore, my time is in the early morning (rarely), during the girls' nap time (sometimes), or usually after hours when the girls are in bed, chores are almost complete (dryer still rumbling), and my tired hubby is dozing on the couch (almost always).

I've accepted that those little bumps in the road will always be there.  My goal is to learn to navigate them as best as I can while still moving forward.  The "things" of most importance will be completed first and all the extra fluff that makes life interesting, well, if it doesn't get done . . . it's not the end of the world.   Life goes on.

  1. Now my friend you must practice what you are preaching! The first step is exactly what you said...those little girls are first however TIME for you is a VERY VERY close second! All the "fluff" as you call it will come in time. That's the mantra "if it doesn't get done...it's not the end of the world"..come on keep saying it!!! hugs L

  2. Oh, yes, there will always be "those little bumps" on our road of life and we have to navigate(balance), decide what is most important (family), and take time for yourself. By letting some things go undone, we find that they really aren't that important and can move forward with those things that are. Hang in there - it's a "short" week! Love ya, M

  3. Balance, my OLW, is so important in a busy life (which you lead). You have the right idea, now just keep remembering your plan. Chores will always be there later. :-)

  4. Even without the business of children at home, I still feel the bumps. I have a colleague who used to say that her chores began at 10, after everyone else was in bed. I never knew how she did it. It sounds like you are doing some of that too, Michelle. Take care of you, too!

  5. For the second week in a row I feel that you are reading my mind and voicing my thoughts. I knew that the beginning of the school year was going to be busy, but it still surprised me.

  6. Beginning of the school year always surprises me--it's such a shock after the freedom of summer. There were a lot of things I didn't do when my boys were home. I wanted to be available to them for what they needed. I don't regret any of the things I let go at the time. None of that was really very important in the long run....You'll get your life together soon. It's just a matter of time

  7. It's always hard to find that balance, especially at the beginning of the school year. But you know what's closest to your heart, Michelle, and you will find a way to balance it all.

  8. I'm with you - balance eludes me but is something I'm continually striving for. Good luck to you! :)

  10. Ah yes, the motion and rhythm of life. It does speed along and we just hope we can balance on through it! Good luck. It sounds like you have all the right intentions and your priorities are in all the right places too.

  11. You capture it so well. This year I am feeling like I have a little bit better balance with my family, but I will need to be careful because it is still early in the year and it will be easy for it to get way out of balance as the year gets busier. I enjoyed your reflections of how you prioritize, knowing you can't do it all (even when you want to).

Picture Books I Love Right Now! #pb10for10

Check out other favorite Picture Book Lists #pb10for10 ______________________________________________________________ As we finish up our summer #cyberPD conversations, I'm quickly reminded that August is right around the corner and I need to start thinking about my picture book list to share. Ten books I love. Ten books I want to share. Ten books that I can't live without in my classroom. Ten books. I love coming up with lists of picture books I adore for various reasons. However, this year I came up with the most brilliant idea! (Well, at least I thought it was brilliant!)  Here are the picture books I can't live without  ... because these are the LAST 10(+3)  picture books I most recently purchased!  ______________________________________________________________ 1.  If I Built a School   by Chris Van Dusen My daughters read If I Built a House and If I Built a Car over and over and over. They couldn't wait to read thi...

The March Slice of Life Story Challenge hosted  at the  Two Writing Teachers Join us for a month of writing! I have twin four and a half -- almost five! -- year old daughters.  I try to be consciously aware of what I say and do in regards to my body image and self-esteem and also with their body image and self-esteem. First of all, because I don't want them to believe everything that society says is true.  Even if they don't fully understand it today.  In addition, because they are fraternal twin sisters, I want them to understand they are individuals with unique and different bodies that God created for each of them.   However, society -- including my loving family and friends -- tell a different story and harmlessly create a comparison war.   My girls constantly hear how beautiful, adorable, cute, fill-i...

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research ...
