sols: part of life

Slice of Life hosted at the

Last Friday night I was able to catch up on some blog reading.  (I know, exciting Friday night, right?)  I read Amy's poetry slice about savoring those little moments like rocking a child to sleep.  I commented that I treasured those moments too, except they usually happen now when one of my girls were sick.

Then early Saturday morning, one of my girls was sick with a fever.

Saturday night, sick girl.  Rocked to comfort us both.

Sunday morning, same girl.  Horrible barky cough.

Sunday afternoon, other girl.  Missed going to Sunday School.

Monday morning, sick girl.  Doctor said it was croup.

Monday evening, other girl.  Missed her sister at school.

Tuesday morning, still sick.  Cough still there, but fever subsided.

Tuesday evening, kissed the other girl on the forehead.  Oh no...fever.

And so the cycle begins again.  Off to the doctor tomorrow--

All before my brother's wedding this Saturday that we are ALL in and excited to where our purple dresses.

But until then --

I'm off to rock my baby girl to remind myself that in the middle of all of this craziness we call life and our endless to-do lists that this -- rocking my baby girl -- is the number one thing on my list because these moments will be few and far between all the growing up.  Your thoughts and prayers for healthy girls are needed!

And after I posted, my friend Chris sent me this link: Because sometimes bedtime takes forever ... and it should.  Those little moments.  Beautifully written.

  1. There is not a more helpless feeling as a mother than when you have sick children. I hope everyone is feeling better soon. Try and get some rest yourself or you will be next! And enjoy the wedding...how fun. Hope the weather cooperates.

  2. My heart says that this post achingly connects to Linda's post today. There is something about the power of just 'being in the moment' with little ones that is reminiscent to Linda's observation about the need to 'be in the moment' with someone who is suffering from dementia. May your girls heal in your loving arms, one sway at a time.

  3. Michelle I will be thinking of you and your girls. It also reminded me to always savor rocking my baby (5 months old now!). She is getting into a better sleep routine now, and I feel like waking up 1-2 times/night rather than so many more makes it even easier to really embrace that time. I can see how there is a shift, and your post reminds me of how so very quickly it shifts to being less and less frequent.

I'm hoping for everyone to be healthy and enjoy the wedding. Hopefully we will get to hear more about it next week!

  4. I have always enjoyed those moments of rocking - the rhythm of the back and forth motion is soothing and comforting, especially when a child is sick. We pray that both M & P will be healed quickly and ready for the festivities. Stay well. We'll see you soon for a whirlwind of a weekend. Hugs & Love to y'all, M

  5. So sorry to read about the croup in your house. That barking cough is the worst sound. So rock away mama as you hold your sweet daughters. I hope all will recover for the big event this weekend.

  6. I kept this little poem around my house while the boys were little (and now with the grandkids).
Cleaning and dusting can wait "til tomorrow
    for babies grow up
    we learn to our sorrow.
    So quiet down cobwebs
    Dust go to sleep
    I'm rocking my baby
    And babies don't keep.

So stay in the moment, Michelle. That to do list will be waiting....

  7. Sorry to hear about the sickness. I am more than sure that kids heal better when mom is there for them. I hope that you all will feel good by Saturday.

  8. Michelle,
Hope the girls are feeling better. Hope you were healthy enough to participate in the wedding plans...
Thanks for mentioning my slice about rocking to sleep-whether they are sick or not rocking together is a very special!

*also on a blog note, for whatever reason, your blog posts are no longer showing up with a white background and it's making the words hard to see for some reason...not sure if it's a blogger thing or a template design issue-just wanted to let you know.

    1. Thanks Amy. I'm not sure what the deal is -- I have the white background on my laptop. Wonder if you are on your phone? But with my Blogger app on the phone, it's a white background too. Keep me posted if it happens again. :) Thanks.

The March Slice of Life Story Challenge hosted  at the  Two Writing Teachers Join us for a month of writing! I have twin four and a half -- almost five! -- year old daughters.  I try to be consciously aware of what I say and do in regards to my body image and self-esteem and also with their body image and self-esteem. First of all, because I don't want them to believe everything that society says is true.  Even if they don't fully understand it today.  In addition, because they are fraternal twin sisters, I want them to understand they are individuals with unique and different bodies that God created for each of them.   However, society -- including my loving family and friends -- tell a different story and harmlessly create a comparison war.   My girls constantly hear how beautiful, adorable, cute, fill-i...

Picture Books I Love Right Now! #pb10for10

Check out other favorite Picture Book Lists #pb10for10 ______________________________________________________________ As we finish up our summer #cyberPD conversations, I'm quickly reminded that August is right around the corner and I need to start thinking about my picture book list to share. Ten books I love. Ten books I want to share. Ten books that I can't live without in my classroom. Ten books. I love coming up with lists of picture books I adore for various reasons. However, this year I came up with the most brilliant idea! (Well, at least I thought it was brilliant!)  Here are the picture books I can't live without  ... because these are the LAST 10(+3)  picture books I most recently purchased!  ______________________________________________________________ 1.  If I Built a School   by Chris Van Dusen My daughters read If I Built a House and If I Built a Car over and over and over. {bedtime stories} 2/31 #sol16

The March Slice of Life Story Challenge hosted  at the  Two Writing Teachers Join us for a month of writing! _________________________________________________________ "Time to head upstairs.  PJs on and let's brush teeth!"  My very favorite time of the day is bedtime with the girls.  I hurry and hustle and bustle them along, so that we have plenty of time to settle into a bedtime story or two (or more like three).  Each girl picks out a book and then one usually snags a third. "Mommy, this is one that you want to read. Right?"  When the girls are completely ready for bed, we meet in my bedroom to snuggle in the big bed.  I'm in the middle, sandwiched between the two girls.  Heads resting close by, slowly slithering closer, they each nestle on my shoulder to get a closer look at every ...
