sols: a weekend of decisions

Slice of Life Stories hosted

an extra long weekend
full of adventure, fun, and
decisions to be made.

playing with trains and baby dolls
or coloring and playdoh
difficult decisions to be made
when you are two and a half.

a freezing cold visit to uw-madison
sharing the excitement of college life
difficult decisions to be made
when you are 16 planning ahead.

wedding dress shopping
with my soon-to-be-sister-in-law
difficult decisions to be made
when you are marrying the love of your life.

another layer plus another layer
hot cocoa and heat blankets
difficult decisions to be made
when you can't seem to warm up.

 decisions, decisions
in the many transitions
of life.

  1. Love that last stanza---some big, some small, but all important decisions to be made. WIsh I could wrap another blanket around me and snuggle in my chair, but, alas, I have to get ready for school....

  2. I love your sweet snippet of the important people in your life. We do have lots of small and big decisions every day. I love hearing about the twins...so much joy. XO

  3. So many choices in our lives - some that will affect what lies ahead of us and others, well just a matter of deciding what (if anything) we really want to do. It reminds me of watching the girls play with their trains and M asking P - "Do you want to go this way or that way?" Praying that the right decisions will be made (either big or small). Love ya M

  4. Another thoughtful poem by Michelle. Important decisions, but the poem was in all lower case, so I was relaxed when I read it. An interesting way to show emotion in a poem by how it is formatted.

  5. I love your repeated line about the many decisions we make every day in our lives. I guess that is why we have to start doing it when we are young and the decisions are (relatively) easier!

  6. "A poem?" I asked before I opened the slice. Yes, a poem was waiting for me. I like how you use minimal words to pack many thoughts together.

  7. Love the heart of this Michelle. You capture quite a lot in those short verses. It sounds like a very full weekend!

  8. Oh to have those 2 1/2 year-old decisions! What joy there is in those moments.

  9. Transitions, indeed....they mark our passage through life, don't they?

  10. Lovely, Michelle! I love how all the decisions feel important to the one making them - even the choice of playdoh vs coloring.

  11. I like that you used the words "full of adventure, fun, and decisions to be made." I struggle with making decisions so linking them with adventure and fun takes away some of the stress.

  12. A great poem to read, thinking of my OLW... CHOOSE. I'll be coming back to reread, I'm sure.

  13. I love how the title alone got me thinking about all the possibilities that your post might include. Then the more I read, the more I loved it as I saw that you captured many different dimensions for different phases in life.

  14. Michelle,
I'm terrible with decisions. It's as hard to decide what I want to cook for dinner as it is to choose a new dishwasher. I enjoyed the myriad of decisions that filled your weekend. It shows how busy you are, and how all decisions matter.

  15. :) So glad you're on the crayon and playdough decision side. Thanks for being a great mentor to the girls on the opposite end! :)

  16. Decisions matter because choice matters
If we had no choice, would decisions have any value?
You are so talented at showing how small things matter
The details-part of being good at writing is taking the time to notice just things like these-all of these decisions matter to these
Special people at this moment in time...sorry for rambling-lack of sleep
    ;)

  17. What a theme for this poem! No matter how old we are or where we are in our days, we always seem to have decisions that have to be made.

An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!

I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research to understand how to
