solsc: good news! bad news. 23/31

March Slice of Life Story Challenge
hosted at the Two Writing Teachers
Join us for a month of writing!

I read the other Ruth's "The Good and the Bad" slice last night and immediately thought of the book: Good News, Bad News by Jeff Mack.  An adorable (and simple) book about two friends trying to enjoy a picnic...but then it starts to rain -- and the good news, bad news cycle goes on.

Good News, Bad News: Spring Edition

The good news . . . I think I maybe saw a glimpse of spring today!
The bad news -- it's not here to stay.

The good news . . . there was a beautiful bright blue cloudless sky!
The bad news -- the deceitful clear sky was filled with frigid cold air.

The good news . . . the sun was enticing and warmed my soul!
The bad news -- the sun's kisses only touched my face through a window.

The good news . . . the snow piles are slowing disappearing!
The bad news -- more snow is arriving to lay a (hopefully) final blanket.

The good news . . . green is emerging from the frozen ground!
The bad news -- the true color of spring will be erased with white snow.

The good news . . ."No winter lasts forever; no spring skips its turn." -Hal Borland
The bad news -- winter still has hold with freezing cold hands.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The good news . . . Here is the Good News, Bad News book trailer!
The bad news -- there is none!  Enjoy!  Hope it's a good news kind of Saturday!
  1. You're in Illinois too, right? I'm dreading the snow tomorrow - I was thinking we were done. Silly me. :)
    Love this book and the format for your slice today!
  2. I love this book. And I love how you borrowed his format. In Colorado:
    The good news: Today is the first day of our spring break.
    The bad news: We woke up to 6 or 8 inches of snow, and it's still snowing HARD!
    The good news: We really the moisture.
    The bad news: The daffodils I saw yesterday are probably squished.
    The good news: I have great slices like yours to read.
    Have a terrific day!
  4. very cute Michelle! We are feeling the sme treatment here in MO. I enjoyed your words " the true color of spring will be erased with white snow." How thoughtful of you to include a quote as well! Makes me assured that Spring will eventually arrive! Your posts are the ones I can go back and read again and again! Thank you
  5. This is a cute reflection on the ridiculous weather that is happening now. I hope that this is the last snowfall for the season also.
  6. Thanks for the book trailer. I love how the other Ruth's slice created an idea for you. The beauty of slicing, reading, and reflecting.
  7. The good news/bad news captures spring in the Midwest this year. I'm kind of looking forward to one last snow, especially since being on break will give me time to play in it, but I am ready for spring, too.
  8. So happy to receive the quote from Hal Borland-there is hope! Great format, Michelle. I liked that you connected with the picture book too-a fun book!
  9. I enjoyed reading your good news/bad news format today, as I did Ruth's too. The back and forth of the piece seems like a conversation to me. Or maybe an argument between Mrs. Positive and Mrs. Negative. Fun!
  10. Here's to enjoying the last bit of winter before spring really does arrive for you! Some of our tulips have been popping up. Our relatives a couple of hours away had snow again, but this week we just had some rain. It seems like spring really is here for us. We'll see though.
    I enjoyed the format. It is always nice to see how we can grow from each other/receive inspiration through the slicing community.
  11. I think that the good news we are all longing for is that Old Man Winter has packed his bags and gone along his merry way!
  12. "The good news . . . green is emerging from the frozen ground!
    The bad news -- the true color of spring will be erased with white snow."
    Yes, yes. That snow Carol and Linda are having is coming to you and then to me! Ack!
  13. Love the words you chose - deceitful, frigid, enticing, and more. Seesaw pattern is one of my favorite structures. Sigh, the snow will be coming again here too. Hope your parents make it before the snow comes.
  14. Great idea! I teach ESL, and I think my students would love this idea. Thanks for the inspiration!
  15. Apparently an Ohio Prosecutor also feels like spring is too long in coming: http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/22/17418713-prosecutor-sees-punxsutawney-phil-pushing-daisies-for-forecast-fraud?lite
    I hope that brings you a smile.
  16. I love your post. And all that snow is making its way to Ohio tomorrow night. Ughhh!!! The good news is that it can't last forever, right? It won't snow in June. :)
  17. Michelle,
    I enjoyed your structure for today's writing. Actually my day seemed much like your day. The sun was shining, the temperature was warmer, and it felt like spring. Tomorrow they are saying 6-8 inches of snow. The bad news: it's my spring break. Oh well, maybe the rest of my family will get a snow day Monday and we can hang out together.
  19. I like the seesaw - back and forth of the good news/bad news in your slice. Hopefully, this will be the end of that white stuff and spring can pop thru. Good news - we made it before the snow arrived Bad news - it's still cold. Good news we get to play an extra day Bad news - it will go by so quickly.
Picture Books I Love Right Now! #pb10for10
Check out other favorite Picture Book Lists #pb10for10 ______________________________________________________________ As we finish up our summer #cyberPD conversations, I'm quickly reminded that August is right around the corner and I need to start thinking about my picture book list to share. Ten books I love. Ten books I want to share. Ten books that I can't live without in my classroom. Ten books. I love coming up with lists of picture books I adore for various reasons. However, this year I came up with the most brilliant idea! (Well, at least I thought it was brilliant!)  Here are the picture books I can't live without  ... because these are the LAST 10(+3)  picture books I most recently purchased!  ______________________________________________________________ 1.  If I Built a School   by Chris Van Dusen My daughters read If I Built a House and If I Built a Car over and over and over. {#sol15} deeper than beauty 8/31
The March Slice of Life Story Challenge hosted  at the  Two Writing Teachers Join us for a month of writing! I have twin four and a half -- almost five! -- year old daughters.  I try to be consciously aware of what I say and do in regards to my body image and self-esteem and also with their body image and self-esteem. First of all, because I don't want them to believe everything that society says is true.  Even if they don't fully understand it today.  In addition, because they are fraternal twin sisters, I want them to understand they are individuals with unique and different bodies that God created for each of them.   However, society -- including my loving family and friends -- tell a different story and harmlessly create a comparison war.   My girls constantly hear how beautiful, adorable, cute, fill-i...
An Interview with Educator/Momma/Writer Ruth Ayres Celebrating #EnticingWriters + Giveaway!
I love sharing book titles with close friends, so I'm happy you are here! I want to share a book that you must add to your to-be-read list. Ruth Ayres has a brand new book titled  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers   published by Stenhouse Publishers. It's another must read from Ruth. There are many professional development books available to learn about mastering our craft of teaching.   However, there are only a few that make a true impact -- and this is one book that weaves raw truth, research, practical ideas, and story all in one {cute} little package.  In  Enticing Hard-To-Reach Writers , Ruth allows her worlds to collide during the creation:  "In this book, I entwine my three story lines as educator, momma, and writer." (p. 6) And she does this in an amazing way through sharing stories of her family, adoption, children living in hard places -- and doing their best  -- and healing. She shares how we can use research ...
